Interleukin-1¥â and Interleukin-1 Receptor Antagonist Levels in Children with Febrile Seizures

Abstract
Purpose: Febrile seizures are the most common type of seizures in children. However mechanism of febrile seizures is unclear. Cytokines have been suggested to play a role in the pathogenesis of febrile seizures. This study was conducted to determine the role of cytokines especially interleukin-1b (IL-1¥â) and interleukin -1 receptor antagonist (IL-1ra) in the pathogenesis of febrile seizures.

Methods: Twenty-six febrile seizure patients and twelve afebrile seizure patients who visited the emergency department of Konyang University Hospital from October 2013 to May 2014 were included in this study. Seventeen patients who had fever without seizures were enrolled as a control group.

Results: Serum levels of IL-1¥â of febrile disease without seizure group (11.57 pg/mL) were significantly higher than that of febrile seizure group (0.66 pg/mL). Serum levels of IL-1ra were not significantly different in the febrile seizure group (2,354.51 pg/mL), afebrile seizure group (3,116.76 pg/mL) and febrile disease without seizure group (3,116.76 pg/mL). In the febrile seizure group, serum levels of IL-1¥â and IL-1ra were not related to seizure recurrence, family history of febrile seizures or duration of seizures. In the afebrile seizure group, serum levels of IL-1¥â and IL-1ra were not related to the duration of seizures.

Conclusion: We could not support that increased IL-1¥â is involved in the pathogenesis of febrile seizures. IL-1¥â is supposed to be involved in other febrile diseases. IL-ra is not supposed to be involved in the pathogenesis of febrile seizures.
